VANCOUVER, B.C  August 16, 2023 - Just For Laughs VANCOUVER is excited today to announce that original series THE NEW WAVE OF STANDUP (13x10), will return for season four beginning August 28 on the free CBC Gem streaming service.
In its fourth season, the series will highlight 13 Canadian comedians from varied backgrounds, each with their own distinctive comedic style. Through their standup performances, they delve into an array of topics including modern technology, societal idiosyncrasies, personal experiences, and the essence of finding humour in everyday life. These emerging comedians are captivating audiences, solidifying their position as Canada’s next generation of comedic stars.
The fourth season will feature;

 

Alannah Brittany – Alannah Brittany is a Vancouver-based comedian, actor and producer. As a fast-rising comic, Alannah has been featured on the JFL Originals album, 'Grossly Underfunded Circus', Apple TV and performed across the nation. She recently won Just For Laughs coveted ‘Stand-up and Pitch’ with her new sitcom, ‘Public Pooled’.

 

Zabrina Douglas – Born and raised in Brampton, ON, comedian Zabrina Douglas draws from her experience as a nurse, a mother, and the daughter of two Jamaican parents. She created and produced her critically acclaimed show Things Black Girls Say. She has performed in well-known festivals like Just For Laughs MONTREAL, The Toronto Fringe Festival, and many others. Her comedy album “Things Black Girls Say” received a 2023 Juno Award nomination for Comedy Album of the Year.

 

Ryan Williams – Kamloops-raised, Vancouver-based comedian Ryan Williams is known for his energetic performances leaving a lasting impression on audiences from coast to coast. His debut album, Manual Labour of Love went #1 on the iTunes Canada Comedy charts. He has appeared on CBC Radio’s The Debaters, was a finalist in Sirius XM's Canada's Top Comic; and has countless festival and TV appearances to his name.

 

Mikey Dubs – Hailing from Victoria, B.C. Mikey Dubs performs all over Vancouver Island and is a regular at Hecklers Comedy Club. He has performed on CBC's Laugh Out Loud Radio, JFL Originals, and The Winnipeg Comedy Festival.

 

Brandon Ash-Mohammed – Toronto-based comedian, writer, and producer, Brandon Ash-Mohammed is the Head Writer and Producer for the Canadian franchise of Rupaul’s Drag Race. He is a two-time Canadian Screen Award winner and created The Ethnic Rainbow, Canada’s first and only comedy show for LGBT comedians of colour. Brandon’s album, “CAPRICORNICATION”, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Canada Comedy charts made him the first gay, black Canadian to release a comedy album and was named by NPR’s Bullseye as “one of the best comedy albums of 2020”. In 2022, he also appeared as a cast member on Prime Video’s LOL: Last One Laughing Canada.

 

Mayce Galoni – Hamilton, ON-raised, based in Los Angeles, Mayce Galoni started performing stand-up when he was 15 years old at bars on school nights. He has now appeared at Just for Laughs, on Kevin Hart’s LOL Network, on MTV, and has two albums that are regularly heard on SiriusXM. He has also been a writer and correspondent on CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and a regular on The Debaters. In 2019, his comedy album was nominated for a JUNO Award; and he’s just getting started.

 

Dakota Ray Hebert – Dakota Ray Hebert is an actor/comedian/writer on the rise. She was born and raised in Meadow Lake, SK, and is a member of English River First Nation. On the small screen, Dakota stars in the hit CTV comedy Shelved; and co-hosts the informative and entertaining APTN series Crazy Like a Lynx. Dakota also stars in the feature film Run Woman Run, now on Crave; recurs in Season 2 of Run The Burbs on CBC; and Just For Laughs’ season 3 of Roast Battle Canada, currently airing on CTV.

 

Clare Belford – Halifax-based Clare Belford is a strikingly sincere comedian. She continues to make waves, bringing her authentic delivery and unique brand of preposterous pragmatism to festivals including the Halifax Comedy Festival, JFL 42, Field Trip Festival and North By Northeast. In 2022 she was selected to perform at Just For Laughs in Montreal as part of New Faces: Canada. Her debut album, The Entire Cabbage was selected as one of the best of 2021 by NPR and can regularly be heard on SiriusXM.

 

Chad Anderson – Winnipeg-based Chad Anderson has performed throughout North America and has appeared at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, JFL TORONTO, Odd Block Comedy Festival and Arctic Air Comedy Festival. His comedy reflects on his own personal experiences including fatherhood and tragedy. He’s been featured multiple times on CBC’s The Debaters and was a cast member in Mary Walsh’s Canada It’s Complicated. His debut album, Live at Wee Johnny’s was released in 2020 and can regularly be heard on SiriusXM.

 

Daniel Woodrow – Toronto-based, Daniel Woodrow has performed stand up across the country numerous times. He’s appeared on Just For Laughs, starred in Seasons 1-3 of CTV’s Roast Battle Canada, where he earned a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series. His acting credits include appearances in Kids In The Hall, Star Trek: Discoveryand CBC’s Pretty Hard Cases

 

Sophia Johnson – New Zealand-raised and now based in Vancouver, Sophia Johnson has appeared in Netflix’s Ash vs the Evil Dead, and CW’s Legends of Tomorrow and Nancy Drew. She has performed at three New Zealand International comedy festivals, including her sold-out show “50 Minutes Plus Laughs”. She has worked as a writer for several years on the hit NZ comedy TV show 7 Days. You can hear her on the JFL Originals album, ‘Yee-Haw Hell Yeah’.

 

Ben Sosa-Wright – Toronto-based Ben Sosa-Wright is a pretty, queer, and Latinx stand-up comedian, writer, and improviser who was named a 2022 Just For Laughs New Face: Canada. Ben was also named one of CBC’s 15 Canadian Comics To Watch in 2019. He performs in clubs all over the country and at festivals such as JFL42, Toronto's Big City Improv Festival, and many others. His podcast, Nostalgique was recently mentioned by Vulture as their comedy podcast of the week!

 

Natasha Lyn Myles – Edmonton-based stand-up comedian Natasha Lyn Myles is originally from the Maritimes. Her comedy focuses on stories from her life, often garnering lots of laughs sometimes at her own expense. She has performed throughout Canada and has been featured at The Grindstone Comedy Festival in Edmonton, and at Re-Set Fest where she hosted a series of shows called Black Laughs Matter highlighting BIPOC standup.

The New Wave of Standup is executive produced by Bruce Hills and Heather Wallace. Produced by Heather Wallace with consulting producers Blake Gregory and Brandi Bertrand; and directed by Trish Neufield. Supervising Producer is Anton Leo.
